Black History is not one month, it is written everyday. Every photo, every post, every moment shared contributed to Black History today. Facebook (Now Meta) was never the author of these stories, but the canvas from which these stories, truths, and communities are shared. We set out to give space to these communities, to share their beauty, their truth, and their story. From Black Boy Joy, to Black Health Matters, to Black Girl Magic our creative partner and academy award winner Bradford Young partnered with us to tell the stories of the people writing their history.
“Black History is timeless. Each day we are living the stories we have been waiting for.” - Bradford Young
These three films told the stories of individuals who are writing their history every day. From Kennedi Carter the youngest photographer to ever shoot the cover of British Vogue, to Brian R. Jr. as he sets out to be the first Black U.S. snowboarder in the Winter Olympics, to Na’imah D. who is writing Black History as a doula every day.
Anthem
The anthem film was the culmination of all the stories from the campaign, and the stories of the black community shared across Meta’s apps every day.
We partnered with artist @callmesabla and @sabrinacurry to bring portraits of the people whose story we were telling to life in a way that made their historical contributions to black culture come alive.
